Rancher Labs Adds OS Optimized for Kubernetes.Purism’s PureBoot Advancing, Closer To Shipping With Their New LaptopsĪnnounced earlier this year was Purism PureBoot for the company’s bundle of safeguards for protecting a user’s boot process by having Intel ME disabled, Coreboot in place of a proprietary system BIOS, a USB Librem Key as their security token, and other mechanisms for securing the boot process and preventing theft/rootkits/security risks. ![]() We could skip this warning and boot anyway, but we insert it and then the Librem Key flashes red to warn us that there was tampering. Once we do reboot, PureBoot detects and warns us that the Librem Key isn’t inserted. ![]() We find this approach to be more convenient for the user than typing in a long passphrase and being a 2-factor authentication, it’s more secure too.įinally we reboot the machine and simulate tampering, by storing a new shared secret in the TPM chip without the Librem Key inserted. Once the OS boots, you see a prompt show up on the screen requesting the user’s GPG PIN, which demonstrates PureBoot unlocking disk encryption using the Librem Key instead of a passphrase. Next we select the Default Boot option, and PureBoot scans the /boot directory for any tampering – and if and when it doesn’t find any, it starts booting the OS as normal. PureBoot then starts by checking the firmware for tampering and authenticating itself to the Librem Key, which blinks green to indicate the system is safe. The video, as you can see, starts with powering on the Librem Laptop with a Librem Key inserted. The Linux environment now supports hundreds of useful, stable, and secure desktop tools that are available for no cost, but Linux still has not displaced Windows or macOS in the race for desktop marketshare.Īndroid, however, which uses the Linux kernel, has actually become mainstream and is competing quite well. Open source enthusiasts have spent years waiting for the Linux desktop revolution. I've had little luck getting them to actually do most of the tasks, occasionally moving around the stored items manually to a different spot will get a colonist to recognize it and do an appropriate task, which is what has led me to believe it's some issue with storage messing up the item being usable, but that's my best guess.Linux desktop users can now use an estimated two million Android apps that were previously unavailable on Linux with VolksPC OS. I have plenty of jobs that could be done in each of these categories, but mostly they seem to just go about transporting objects or doing nothing. I've tried to force jobs by setting a colonist to the only job they should do, and it hasn't worked in these cases, they just go to the rec room with an "all assigned tasks finished" message. I manually moved it to the floor, and it showed being available on the stove, but even setting cooking to the only job of a colonist still shows it as "all tasks done." ![]() With cooking for instance, I had 8 wheat in a Fridge, but the stove was showing I had 0 wheat available. I can't pinpoint any exact reason or fixes, but it usually seems to be related to storage somehow, like something about storage makes it unable to be seen? I've had similar bugs with cooking, farming, chemistry I think pretty much most stations one way or another.
